Sharks (elasmobranchs) have been on earth almost unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs.
There are about 400 species of known sharks. The largest shark is the plankton eating Whale Shark reaching up to almost 14 metres long. The smallest is the Spined Pygmy Shark at less than 18 cm long.
